April is School Library Month, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate school librarians and their programs.

Also during the month, National Library Week is celebrated April 7-13. This year’s theme is “Libraries = Strong Communities” and illustrates how today’s libraries are at the heart of our cities, towns, schools and campuses.

Kayla Gayler is librarian at Fredonia Elementary School.

In Nacogdoches ISD, librarians provide a number of critical resources, programs and expertise on their campuses. In communities across Texas and the nation, libraries and librarians provide an indispensable service in our, particularly when considering their impact on our youngest readers.

The benefits of early childhood reading are staggering. A student that reads an average of 20 minutes per day – or a young child read to for 20 minutes per day – will read 3,600 minutes per school year while being exposed to a staggering 1.8 million words per year. And those same students average scoring in the 90th percentile on standardized tests.
